FIELDS OF INTEREST

FIELDS OF INTEREST

Dr. Agras's major field of interest is Pediatric Urology. In addition, due to his experience and knowledge on Reconstructive Urology, he concerns with the specific subjects of Adult Urology, i.e. uretral stricture disease, andrology, robotic urology and stone disease

PEDIATRIC UROLOGY

After having completed his residency in Urology, of which the clinical director was Dr. Demokan Erol, an experienced Turkish author on Pediatric Urology; Dr. Agras had chance to work with world known pediatric urologists Dr. Laurence.S. Baskin, Dr. Hiep T. Nguyen, Dr. Patrick Duffy, Dr. İmran Mushtaq and Dr. Peter Cuckow in United States of America and Great Britain. His studies on Pediatric Urology gained many prizes on several national and international congresses. In addition to contributing the education of many Urology Residents, he had raised Pediatric Urology Fellows as well. In children he is experienced on many diseases i.e from undescended testicle to inguinal hernia, from vesicoureteral reflux to hydronephrosis, from hypospadias to spina bifida patients who require complex reconstructions. For details, please see part "About".

URETHRAL STRICTURE DISEASE

Urethral Stricture Disease is one of the most difficult subjects of both adult and pediatric urology, usually having seen after trauma. Today, unfortunately persisting on endoscopic techniques in many centers after failed endoscopic urethrotomies is making to reach the cure more and more difficult every time and causing the recurrence of the problem. Complicated nature of the disease, difficulty of reconstructive surgery needed and the scarce amount of experienced reconstructive surgeons about this problem are other problems. Dr. Agras completed his residency in the clinic of Dr. Demokan Erol, and this clinic was used to known as Turkey's urethra clinic that time. In UCSF, Dr. Agras had chance to observe the operations by the world known author in this field, Dr. Jack McAninch, for more than a year. Current place of practice of Dr Agras, is one of the most busy trauma centers in Turkey, and Dr. Agras with his wide experince in this field, has been actively busy in the managament of patients with Urethral Stricture Disease.

ANDROLOGY

Another field of experince on Adult Urology of Dr. Agras is "Erectile Dysfunction and its surgical management". After observing the operations by world known author Dr. Tom Lue in UCSF, Dr. Agras had worked with Dr. Onder Kayigil for 12 years in Ankara Ataturk Hospital and performed many complex penile surgeries. In 2018, he had chance to update his knowledge in this field in the course on human cadavers in Madrid. Dr. Agras especially has a big experience on penile curvatures, penile prosthesis implantation, Peyronie's disease and penile revascularization.

ROBOTIC SURGERY

Dr. Agras had chance to observe his first urologic robotic operations in UCSF between years 2004 and 2005, performed by Dr. Peter Caroll (uro-oncology) and Dr. Hiep T. Nguyen (pediatric urology). Those years were the crawling years of Robotic Urology, and later Dr. Nguyen left the UCSF and had started to Harvard University to start pediatric robotic urology program in Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Agras, after turning back to Turkey, had completed the Laparoscopic Urology and Radical Prostatectomy Course in Berlin-Germany (2008), the Advanced Laparoscopic Urology and Robotic Surgery Course in IRCAD Strasbourg-France (2009); and Robotic Radical Prostatectomy course on human cadavers in Geneva-Switzerland.  After his hospital of practice, Ankara Ataturk Hospital had bought Da Vinci Robot in 2010, the Urology clinic had became one of of the busiest and experienced centers of the world, in robotic oncologic surgery after few years. The first pediatric robotic surgery in a child in Turkey was performed by Dr. Agras in 2014 (Ureteral reimplantation for vesicoureteral reflux disease). Many pediatric cases of ureteral reimplantations and pyeloplasties using robotic system were performed successfully by him after then.

STONE DISEASE

Open surgery for urinary system stones are almost not performed in many countries of the world after the advancement of endoscopic technology in the field. However open surgery may be needed for possible complications (hematoma, perforation, residual stones etc.) developed during endoscopic surgery for stones. Thus, it is important for an urologist doing endoscopic surgery to be familiar to open stone surgery. This is an important problem for education of young urologists who did not see enough open surgeries during their residencies. Dr. Agras had performed many complicated open stone operations, i.e. pyelolithotomy, anatrophic nephrolithotomy, lower ureter stone ureterolithotomy, while working in an important stone referral center, Ankara Numune Hospital between 2001 and 2004. Later, during his fellowship in USA, Dr. Agras had chance to observe the percutaneous nephrolithotomy operations (endoscopic surgery) from the world known 'stone disease and laparoscopic urology' author, Dr. Marshall Stoller. After heading back to Turkey, he had performed more than 200 adult percutaneous nephrolithotomy operations and has been continuing his practice on adult and pediatric cases.
